Today, Mexico is the primary drug trafficking country for methamphetamine entering the United States.
Crystal meth is damaging to many areas of the body -- including the brain, kidneys and liver -- but the heart damage can be extensive. Its use can cause symptoms such as irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia), rapid pulse, high blood pressure, inflammation of the small blood vessels near the brain and/or inflammation of the heart lining (endocarditis).
Meth is such an addictive drug that users will go days or even weeks without sleeping or eating while constantly using meth. When a meth user does this it is known as a binge or run.
When a person stops taking meth they will experience withdrawal symptoms. Typical meth withdrawal symptoms include stomach cramps, intense hunger, headaches, shortness of breath, exhaustion and severe depression.
Signs of a meth lab include: A strong smell of urine or unusual chemical smells such as ether, ammonia or acetone; a large amount of cold tablet containers that list ephedrine or pseudoephedrine as ingredients; coffee filters containing a white pasty substance, a dark red sludge, or small amounts of shiny white crystals; bottles or jars with rubber tubing attached; glass cookware or frying pans containing a powdery residue.
