When a drug user initially takes meth the drug sends a message to the pleasure center in their brain. They will feel alert, full of energy and self-confident because their brain is releasing dopamine - a brain chemical that carries messages between brain cells.
Meth is known to be highly addictive. Some users become physically dependent upon the drug quickly (within the first few times of trying it).
Meth was developed by a Japanese chemist in 1919 and used during World War II to help soldiers stay alert and to energize factory workers.
In 2005 there were an estimated 2.4 million current (past month) meth users over the age of 12.
The effects of meth last much longer than cocaine (another commonly abused stimulant). Meths effects last on average 10-12 hours while cocaines effects typically last approximately 45 minutes.
